Armed Services YMCA Hosts Winter Clothing Contest | Item
FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – Moving to Alaska can be costly for families who need to outfit adults and several children with adequate winter clothing. On September 20, the Armed Services YMCA helped ease some of the financial burden by providing free winter clothing to 250 school-aged children in Fort Wainwright through the ASYMCA Bargain Shop.
âWe do it every year,â said Amanda Curry, manager of the ASYMCA Bargain Store, and the business was booming. Curry noted that 30 people were helped during the first 45 minutes of the event.
Each adult customer was allowed to bring a full set of clothing for all of their children aged 5-18. This included a jacket, snow pants, boots, hat, and a pair of gloves or mittens.
The store sells such items year round, as well as a wide variety of other clothing, housewares, books, sports equipment and other items. However, for the giveaway event, all winter gear was free and gathered in one place, and the rest of the shop was closed for the afternoon.
According to Jordan Burnett, program coordinator for ASYMCA, Delta Airlines sponsored the event and provided free snacks and toiletries for families to take home.
All of the clothes and boots handed out at the event were items that community members had donated over the past few months. Some items were new, with or without a tag, and some had been worn before but were in excellent condition, Burnett said.
Families who could not find certain items in one or more of their children’s sizes were able to leave their names and information with the staff.
Burnett said the event was held at multiple locations in Alaska on or near military installations and that subsequently, “ASYMCA statewide will bring together elements of events in the state and will share with other places. We will contact the families about the missing items.
However, this did not appear to be a major issue during the Fort Wainwright event. Curry said they had “a fair amount of stuff left.” We had almost overstocked.
Families who registered in advance but were unable to attend the event on the 20th were able to come to the store on the 21st or 22nd to pick up their items.
Curry said she received positive feedback from families who attended.
âThey were really grateful, very grateful. They saved a lot of money.
