Currently, the global aviation industry produces about 2-3% of all human-made carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and is responsible for 3.5% of global warming. In order to reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation sector, researchers around the world are increasingly looking for sustainable alternatives to traditional aircraft fuel.

One of the latest alternatives comes from researchers at the University of Georgia. The team developed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from a type of mustard that can replace petroleum-based aviation fuel and reduce carbon emissions by up to 68%.

The team, led by University of Georgia scientist Puneet Dwivedi, estimated the break-even price and lifecycle carbon emissions of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from oil obtained from Brassica Carinata, an inedible oilseed crop.

The latest growing number of SAF studies aim to provide a less demanding alternative to aviation fuel. For example, Rolls Royce performed its first tests of 100% sustainable aviation fuel in a business jet engine earlier this year. Then there are other alternatives such as liquid hydrogen and ammonia fuel; researchers have also developed technology to convert plastic waste into jet fuel ingredients.

The new aviation fuel study comes after US President Joe Biden proposed a sustainable fuel tax credit as part of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge, which brings together federal agencies to increase SAF production at nationwide. With his new proposal, Biden has set a target of a 20% reduction in aviation emissions by 2030 and achieving a fully zero carbon aviation sector by 2050. Credit to The proposed tax requires a 50% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions, which the University of Georgia’s Aviation Fuel exceeds.

In addition, the production price of Carinata-based SAF ranges from $ 0.12 per liter at the low end to $ 1.28 per liter, which is lower than petroleum-based aviation fuel by 0.50. $ per liter when current economic incentives are included in the analysis. Carinata can also be grown out of season, which means that it doesn’t trigger feeding issues over fuel. Additionally, according to Puneet Dwivedi, growing Carinata offers all the benefits of cover crops related to water quality, soil health, biodiversity and pollination. His current research focuses on modeling the economic and environmental feasibility of the production and consumption of Carinata-based FAS in Georgia, Alabama and Florida from a supply chain perspective.

“Our results would be particularly relevant for the state of Georgia, which is the sixth largest consumer of conventional aviation fuel in the country, is home to the busiest airport in the world and is home to Delta, a leading global airline, ” Dwivedi noted. “I look forward to continuing more research to provide a sustainable alternative to our current model of air travel. Carinata has the potential to be a win-win situation for our rural areas, the aviation industry and, most importantly, climate change. “

Oct. 18 (Reuters) – U.S. refiners are expected to post higher profits for the third quarter as gasoline and diesel sales margins improved despite soaring crude oil costs, analysts said.

After more than a year of declining fuel demand, gasoline and distillate consumption is back at five-year averages in the United States, the world’s largest fuel consumer. This has increased the margins on refined products to more than double what these companies were doing at the same time a year ago.

The seven largest independent U.S. refiners, including giants Marathon Petroleum (MPC.N) and Valero Energy (VLO.N), are expected to post an average gain per share of 66 cents, compared to a loss of $ 1.32 for the third quarter 2020, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. (GRAPHIC: https://graphics.reuters.com/USA-REFINERIES/EARNINGS-OUTLOOK/mopanjqyzva/)

These gains are due to the 3-2-1 crack gap, an indicator of refining margins, which assumes that one barrel of crude oil is refined into three parts gasoline, two parts diesel and one part jet fuel. . This spread is currently $ 21 a barrel, down from about $ 9 a year ago.

Energy demand recovered quickly from the worst days of the pandemic in 2020, and prices for Brent and U.S. crude oil have hit multi-year highs in recent days. But the demand for products also increased, which helped to increase the margins.

Product supplied – an indicator of demand for refined products in the United States – was 21.5 million barrels per day in the most recent week, slightly higher than the same period in 2019, before the start of the pandemic, according to the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA). .

“The market is returning to equilibrium,” Credit Suisse analyst Manav Gupta said in a note.

Refiners are also benefiting from lower inventories of their products, as recent storms and the pandemic have taken refining capacity offline. About 2.5 million barrels per day of refining capacity have been shut down since the start of the pandemic, which is nearly four times the 10-year average, according to Credit Suisse’s Gupta.

Delta Air Lines’ refinery in Monroe, Pa. Earned nearly $ 100 million last quarter, its first positive results since the first quarter of 2020, according to figures released last week. Tudor Pickering Holt analysts cited the heavy spread of gasoline and diesel cracking as helping the refiner recover.

Demand for jet fuel is still below pre-pandemic levels, but international flights are expected to resume to Europe in November. The spot price of kerosene-type jet fuel from the US Gulf Coast is $ 2.10 per gallon, the highest since October 2018, despite demand still 12% below 2018 levels, data shows of the EIA.

Analysts have also increased estimates for refiners such as PBF Energy and Hollyfrontier due to falling costs of complying with national biofuels laws. Refiners are required to blend ethanol into the country’s gasoline pool or buy credits for those who can.

The cost of these loans fell sharply in the third quarter. Reuters reported in September that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to recommend reducing federal biofuel blending mandates for 2021 to levels below 2020, analysts said. Read more

Most investors will enter this weekend with a spring in their approach. They can thank the booming retail sales and continued earnings momentum, which set up a nice end to Friday for the stock markets.

Overall retail sales rose unexpectedly for the second month in a row, as September’s figure rose 0.7% month-over-month, beating expectations of a 0.2% decline. And similar to August, September sales increased in categories such as clothing, groceries, general merchandise, non-store retail and miscellaneous.

“Households also benefited from an increase in income from government benefits in mid-August and September, thanks to advance payments of the child tax credit under the American Rescue Plan Act,” says the economist. from Barclays, Pooja Sriram. “As we noted earlier, retail sales have tended to do well in the months when households have received a pandemic relief stimulus.”

Also impressive the pros was Goldman Sachs (GS, + 3.8%), which reported 63% profit growth and 26% revenue growth to hit third-quarter best estimates and to cap a week of encouraging reports from Wells fargo (WFC, + 6.8%), Bank of America (TA, + 2.9%), Citigroup (C, + 2.1%) and others.

“Goldman Sachs is performing at a high level surpassing other major banks and gaining portfolio stakes in investment banking, commerce, and consumer and wealth management,” said CFRA analyst Kenneth Leon, which reiterated its strong buy rating on GS stock and raised its 12-month price target to $ 260 per share from $ 245.

A revolutionary new way to travel across the United States.

The new HondaJet 2600 concept has just been unveiled and it will be the very first light jet capable of non-stop transcontinental flight across the United States. This feat is possible thanks to a long list of breakthroughs, like the Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration, Natural Laminar Flow technology on the fuselage wing and nose, and the carbon composite fuselage. It will have a breathtaking range of 2,652 nautical miles, a high speed cruise of 450 knots and a ceiling of 47,000 feet. In addition, it is the first transcontinental jet designed for single-pilot operation.

As for the passengers, they will certainly fly comfortably and silently. The inclusion of the OTWEM configuration will significantly reduce cabin vibration, allowing for a much more comfortable flight compared to other light jets. Passengers will also enjoy the height of the cabin, the best in its class. As for the layout, the HondaJet 2600 will be offered with three different types of different and customizable cabin configurations. There is no word on the production yet, as this concept has been unveiled to garner customer feedback and validate market demand.

Investigators determined that the crew of an Etihad Airways Boeing 787-10 did not set the correct destination pressure reference for the altimeter before the jet plunged well below the glide line. when approaching Abu Dhabi.

The passenger plane (A6-BMD) was on a cargo flight from Beijing on June 6 last year, with only a crew of three on board.

During the approach to runway 31L, the aircraft remained approximately 300 feet below the correct glide line.

At a distance of 1.3 nm from the threshold, its indicated altitude was 570 feet, but the aircraft had in fact descended to 210 feet above the ground. The crew performed a go-around after noting that the runway precision approach path lights were all lit “red”, indicating that the jet was too low.

According to the UAE Air Accident Investigation Area, the crew did not preset the barometric pressure reference QNH to the correct number for the destination airport during the descent procedure.

The pressure setting for Abu Dhabi was 999 mb – as reported on the ATIS terminal’s automatic information service – but the preset figure remained at 1009 mb, the setting the crew had used in Beijing.

When the crew changed from the standard pressure setting of 1013 mb used in cruise to the preset number for the destination, the altimeter would have incorrectly calculated that the aircraft’s altitude was higher than its actual value, because the QNH pressure at Abu Dhabi was lower than this. In Beijing.

The investigation indicates that the three crew members were “not aware” of the improper pressure setting in Abu Dhabi, even though the captain had confirmed that he had received the ATIS information from the airport which included the correct figure.

He said the crew had become “obsessed” with energy management, to the detriment of overseeing other functions, as they feared the plane would fly high as it approached a waypoint. border between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

This focus on jet energy management resulted in “inappropriate” controls over QNH pressure setting during transition, the survey adds.

Because they believed the aircraft was on the correct descent profile, the crew did not sufficiently monitor the vertical situation display or intersect the vertical situation of the aircraft during the approach.

As the pilots performed a go-around seeing the red PAPI light displayed, the aircraft did not climb to the correct missed approach altitude of 4,000 feet but – because the altimeter pressure reference was still incorrect – stabilized at 3,700 feet.

The investigation indicates that, during the missed approach and subsequent guidance, the crew were repeatedly informed of the correct pressure setting, which at that time was 998 mb.

At one point, the crew realized the error and changed the QNH setting to the correct value.

But confusion and doubt over the plane’s go-around and altitude prompted Abu Dhabi tower controllers to request an urgent check of the PAPI lamps. Approach control was asked to extend the downwind leg of the 787 for the check to be carried out.

But while the ground personnel were dispatched to runway 31L for PAPI control, they were unable to enter the runway area because the 787 was already on its second approach. As the aircraft approached touchdown, the pilots were instructed to watch the PAPI lights, and after the jet had landed safely, the crew confirmed that the PAPI lights were displayed correctly.

Etihad Airways stressed the importance of correct altimeter setting after the incident and introduced a requirement to confirm the QNH setting before the initial approach fix.

The relaxation of travel restrictions and the attractiveness of private flights have led to an unexpected increase in business aviation, with traffic rising from 2019 levels. This is filling seats for private operators and increasing traffic. aircraft manufacturers’ order books, straining the supply of jets, spare parts and pilots.

Craig Ross, head of California-based Aviation Portfolio advising business jet customers, said he was seeing cases of canceled flights due to a lack of pilots and delays due to a shortage of aircraft parts for maintenance.

The undeniable chemistry between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor while filming “Cleopatra” was just the beginning of one of Hollywood’s greatest real love stories of all time.

Liz Taylor knew what she was getting into when she decided to hug Burton after their first kiss in a scene from “Cleopatra”. The spark between them was so obvious that it quickly became the topic of everyone’s conversation. She knew her reputation as a womanizer, but she couldn’t help but se:

“When you’re in love and lusting like that, you just have to grab it with both hands and weather the storm.”

She was one of the most important Hollywood stars of her time, and he was the Shakespearean actor of her generation. What was supposed to be just an onscreen love story turned into a real romance.

They had met a decade before the filming of “Cleopatra” and it was not love at first sight. In 1952, they met at a party, and Burton was already well known in the social circle as a womanizer. At the time, Taylor had decided not to “be a cut in his belt.”

Well, maybe not at that time. Ten years later, they reunited to embody the iconic “Cleopatra”. Taylor played the Egyptian Queen and Burton, her lover, Mark Antony.

The all-consuming relationship was intense from the start. When they got together for the shoot, she was married to Eddie Fisher and he was married to Sybil Christopher.

At the start of production, she had confessed to her then-husband about his affair with Burton, who showed up drunk and at the uninvited social event the couple were throwing. After an altercation between the three, Burton and Taylor kissed in front of Fisher.

Of his eight marriages, Richard Burton was perhaps the one that had the hypnotic effect on Taylor, and this is the most extreme relationship of all, both in a good way and in a bad way.

Everything about this couple was intense – drinking, partying, loving and fighting. However, there is a limit to everything. Their marriage never worked out, despite the intensity of the feelings.

It wasn’t for lack of trying either. The duo turned 13 into a tumultuous relationship that included 11 years of marriage, divorce, remarriage and a year later a second divorce.

The author of the memoir “My Life in Focus, A Photographer’s Journey with Elizabeth Taylor and the Hollywood Jet Set” and Taylor’s close friend Gianni Bozzacchi revealed that their passion was so strong it was at the same time destructive. .

Their relationship was fueled by drama coming from both sides. Taylor had a strong tendency to self-destruct which would lead her to match Burton’s volatility. The actress has attempted suicide twice, including one in front of Burton.

Taylor and Burton weren’t shy about yelling at each other and fighting, and things got physical at times. In one episode, according to to studio head Spyros Skouras, Taylor has already been injured:

“Two black eyes, his nose was out of shape and it took him 22 days to recover enough to resume filming.”

The romance-drama dynamic fueled headlines at the time and brought the duo to worldwide attention. Their penchant for excess has taken many forms.

She was obsessed with jewelry, so Burton continued to overbid Aristotle Onassis to buy the world’s most expensive diamond for his wife, the 69.42-carat Krupp diamond, known as the Taylor-Burton diamond. Their follies continued on designer clothes, yachts and private jets.

Gianni revealed that the love of “the world’s most important couple” is very real, but very fragile. According to him, they didn’t have much privacy and their extravagant lifestyle and numerous feuds made them the favorite couple of the paparazzi at the time.

Burton’s alcoholism and compulsive seduction has led him to flirt with virtually every woman he has met, including his friends’ wives and even younger ones. In one of his many letters to Taylor, this a written after another betrayal:

“I know I am a terrible liar sometimes, but please believe that I have never betrayed in word or deed the physical you or the mental you. I just love you too much.

After more than a decade of a high-profile self-defeating relationship, Taylor filed for divorce in 1974, claiming that she “had tried everything she could.”

Even after the petition, Burton continued to write her letters, sometimes almost daily, even going so far as to threaten to kill herself if she did not want to respond; while at the same time he would find himself engaged in several affairs.

Among his mistresses, one was an 18-year-old waitress, mother of three, whose husband threatened to kill Burton, and the other was Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia.

They met a year later to discuss the divorce settlement, but ended up with tears in each other’s arms. They remarried but the second attempt did not last long. Despite their deep love for each other, the issues they went through in the 11 years of marriage were still there.

The second union didn’t last a full year, and Burton got into an affair with tall, blonde Suzy Hunt. He saw in Hunt an opportunity for a whole new beginning, away from the drama, drunkenness and destructive relationship he had with Taylor.

He married Hunt three weeks after the divorce, and Taylor ended up marrying Republican Senator John Warner. Even after years of separation, the two would eventually meet, quickly igniting the spark between them.

Burton eventually quit drinking with the help of his two former wives, first Suzy, then his next wife Sally. However, on a night out with John Hurt in 1984, he fell from the wagon which resulted in a brain hemorrhage. He died two days later, at the age of 58.

Even after marrying her seventh husband, Elizabeth Taylor admitted that she never stopped loving Burton. According to at Closer Weekly, she even kept a photo of him on her nightstand decades after his death.

IIt’s always tragic when a love turns sour, especially one that has lasted longer than any other adult relationship. But in 1993, I lost my heart in an office in Slough. Electronic Arts invited a motley team from GamesMaster, the TV show I was hosting at the time, to see what they claimed to be the future of video games. A dimly lit desk and a gray plastic table littered with spaghetti cables didn’t promise much. But then a switch was flipped and the earth moved for me. Years before Tim found Dawn, I found Fifa International Soccer on Mega Drive.

I had already had relations with football matches. Game day was my first love when I was 12, and I split my time between him and his brain brother Football Manager. The kickoff was the one that escaped me because I couldn’t play when it was important. I was considering settling down with Sensible Soccer, but Fifa arrived in all their 3D isometric attire, promising four players the race of a lifetime. I felt like I had torn the fabric of time to spy on the future.

Over the next 29 years, I spent thousands of hours playing incarnations of that same game, across births, deaths and marriages, from Cockermouth, Cumbria, to Martin’s River, Nova Scotia. While the rest of my life has changed, Fifa was there every year, with slightly altered ball physics. But this year, I will not buy Fifa 22.

It’s the online game that didn’t. I never cared about this malarkey until I moved to Canada in 2009 and had no real friends to play with other than guys in plaid shirts who didn’t realize that the NHL hockey games peaked in 1994. Puck that, I thought. Instead, I’ll be playing Fifa Ultimate Team through a flickering internet connection. But let’s face it: Most things online are horrible, even when they were once meant to be forces of good. Twitter exposes hypocritical politicians while spreading socio-political hatred. Photos of your grandmother on Facebook are adorable, but it’s also a pit of Covid misinformation that could actually kill her. Online gambling, which should be the culmination of reaching out across the world to unite us in a fun distraction from our daily shit shows, becomes just another way to be shit.

Most of the time, you don’t just get beaten up online. You are being humiliated. Someone will score a cheap goal, perform an excessive streak of celebrations, and pass the ball in the back for the remainder of the game. It was Fifa online this year. You might say, well, that’s what real football is. If you paid me Messi’s salary I would put up with it, but I’m supposed to be here having fun.

Adding anonymous communication to the competition has always been a terrible idea for our precarious civilization, and when I beat someone without a face and the words “GOOD LUCK YOU SWEATING YOU F * G” appear on the screen? It’s not the content I’m here for. I have read that particularly bilious FIFA players threaten physical and sexual abuse if they lose. Of course, I can turn off my messages, but that doesn’t stop knowing that’s what human beings choose to do with their time. It may be Trump, Covid, or an environmental disaster that burns the world and unleashes toxic clouds of misanthropic nihilism, but it all kind of went Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant.

That makes Dave Perry infamous reaction failing Super Mario 64 on GamesMaster seems positively noble. And that’s where I feel a hint of guilt. GamesMaster has promoted competitive play. Before online gaming and competitive esports, I handed out my share of withered comments to the losers. I never thought it would happen at this global level, any more than Tim Berners-Lee thought his internet idea would result in the Two Girls One Cup.

Speaking of ideas, here are two of the worst in the game: microtransactions and loot boxes. Vile concepts in the wasteland of 2021. Loot boxes are essentially games of chance, gambling is addictive, and microtransactions are the most effective addiction delivery system since cigarettes. I’ve been seduced by them in the past, they’re so cleverly made – it’s militarized behavioral science. If the loot box designers had been tasked with Covid, we would have only had a few isolated sniffles.

Considering that EA took $ 1.62 billion out of Fifa Ultimate Team deals alone in 2021, that’s not going to change. But I can.

It’s not just about the money, it’s about time. When I was doing press for the GamesMaster book it’s next year, everyone asked me if I still play video games. I said yes. But I realized no, really. I just played Fifa. Of course, I’m going to fight through hit games of the GTA, Mass Effect, and Witcher variety, but my own kids have urged me to play games that they love, and I’ve ignored them because I Had to score three ends in a rivals match to get my final trade against the Vidić icon card. How sad. I took my pick from all the play kitchens and all I really did was eat at McDonald’s.

Ironically, these are things with big storytelling that my kids got into – games like Outer Wilds, Edith Finch, and Life Is Strange. I fell in love with video games because they told stories. You broke buttons and so on, but Jet Set Willy was a story. Atic Atac was a story. Pajamarama was a story. The only story Fifa tells is Sisyphus, pushing a rock up a hill every day to restart at dawn with another insignificant achievement to achieve. And Sisyphus didn’t have to replace the Xbox controllers twice a year because he smashed them against the wall in a blazing rage during Weekend League.

Athina Onassis, Aristotle Onassis’ granddaughter, made a rare public appearance at the wedding of Sammy Zane and Lauren Van Berkel in Monte Carlo.

The 36-year-old rider was virtually unrecognizable in the crowd of over 700 guests attending the social event of the season.

The photo of Onassis at the wedding was posted by Gianna Darili, a Greek-American who attended the celebration with her husband.

The lavish wedding featured dancers, orchestras and elaborate fireworks that filled the Monte Carlo skies for ten minutes.

The Zane family is a leading family in the shipping industry that owns Naftomar Shipping & Trading. Naftomar was established in 1972 in Beirut and moved to Athens in 1991 where it rose to the top of the LPG market.

The tragic story of the Onassis family

Onassis is the last surviving descendant of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and the daughter of Christina Onassis, who died at the age of 37 after a life filled with excess of all kinds.

The only surviving Onassis (her uncle Alexandros having died in a plane crash in 1973), she seems, like her grandfather and mother, to have been singled out for a difficult life despite her wealth.

His father, French pharmaceutical heir Thierry Roussel, never had his mother’s trust, and their marriage was short and eventful, ending after just eight months. The $ 800 million Athina would inherit from her mother’s estate would not be paid to her until her 18th birthday.

Christina was reportedly addicted to sleeping pills and was known to have participated in wild parties at her father’s house on the Greek island of Skorpios.

After her stepmother Jackie Kennedy Onassis stopped visiting the island in the 1980s, Christina erased all her memories in Skorpios and threw huge parties for the global jet set there.

His daughter Athina Onassis was born on January 29, 1985 and was subsequently baptized in Skorpios. Nightlife on the island calmed down after that time, and Christina and Roussel filed for divorce eight months later.

The lights went out on Skorpios, however, when Christina Onassis was found dead on November 19, 1988 in the bathtub at a friend’s house in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Athina was only three years old when her mother Christina died of pulmonary edema.

She was then taken to live with her father and girlfriend – with whom he had an affair while married to his mother.

At Christmas 1988, a third tomb was opened next to those of Aristotle and Alexandros Onassis on Skorpios. Athina, the heiress to the Onassis fortune, returned to the island ten years later to lay flowers on her mother’s grave.
