“I visited my father in prison until I was about 10 years old,” she told The Guardian. “[However, I stopped when] I realized that I didn’t want to spend my time visiting someone who didn’t want to spend their time staying out of jail. “
Maya, who made a documentary on Channel 5 in 2017 where she decided to reconnect with him, also told the outlet that tough times have made her “more determined to prove everyone wrong.”

Maya suffered a heartache when she was only 16, when her boyfriend Rico Gordon was killed in a shootout.

“I’ve been through a lot,” she said. “With the passing of my boyfriend, it gave me a fearless approach. I felt like life was really short,” she told Cosmopolitan UK.
“At 16 you think the world is a fairy tale and that got me out of that. It made me even more determined … Statistically I should have derailed at that point, and I feel like my career was the thing that kept that from happening. I had hope and there was something to look forward to. “
