Inside famous fashion designer Daniel Lismore’s first UK exhibition in Coventry
Daniel Lismore brings Be Yourself; Everyone else is already taken to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum this week
Famous fashion designer Daniel Lismore is leaving behind the glitz of Hollywood, or at least some of it, and returning to his roots for a bold new exhibition in Coventry.
Be yourself; Everyone Is Already Taken, which opened at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum on Friday February 18, will see Daniel’s thought-provoking work exhibited in the UK for the very first time.
‘England’s most eccentric chest of drawers’, according to fashion bible Vogue, many of the pieces Lismore has designed for her celebrity clientele, which includes Nicki Minaj, Naomi Campbell, Cara Delevingne and Boy George, will be on display in Coventry .

Part of Coventry UK City of Culture, the exhibition will showcase unpublished private archives and materials and examine social, historical and cultural themes at the heart of Lismore’s work and life.
Photos, found objects, ephemera, artwork and sketchbooks will document and celebrate his journey from Coventry schoolboy to teenager and famous fashion designer.
The major installation An Army of My Life will draw inspiration from the Terracotta Army and feature 50 3D sculptures modeled on the artist, including a cast of his face and manifestations of his life as a sculpture.
According to the art gallery, the 6-foot-4 life-size sculptures are “fashioned in Lismore’s elaborate and extravagant ensembles, expressions of bodily adornment and conceptual thought.”
“They combine high fashion with items from her personal collection of nearly 7,000 unique curiosities.”
Born in Bournemouth, Lismore later grew up in Fillongley before studying photography and fashion design at what was Butts College in the town centre.
As well as famous models and popstars, the 37-year-old has designed costumes for the English National Opera and played a big part in Coventry Moves, the opening ceremony of Coventry UK City of Culture.
Be yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken was first presented in 2016, co-curated by Savannah College of Art & Design in Atlanta, USA, and exhibited at SCAD’s Fashion and Film Museum.
The exhibition has also been shown in Basel, Miami, Iceland, Naples and Poland, but never before in the UK.
For this return exhibition, which will continue until June 26, many rooms will be improved and enlarged with new works on display.
