Kaptain Sunshine Fall/Winter 2022 Clothing Collection Lookbook

Japanese brand Kaptain Sunshine exists for one reason only: to create the best wearables imaginable. Like so many of the other quality-conscious brands in the island nation, Kaptain Sunshine specializes in fairly affordable, domestically-made clothing made to exquisite standards, no-frills stuff that makes more sense when you pick it up. .

It’s not designed to turn heads, unless you come across others with comparable taste.

They may glimpse your Kaptain Sunshine Donegal wool overcoat or your perfectly washed denim jacket and understand what’s going on here, but the average viewer probably won’t understand the difference between this kind of subtle elegance and the average normcore layering piece.

Rather than opting for crazy cuts, Kaptain Sunshine designer Shinsuke Kojima rejects ostentatious detailing in favor of quiet confidence.

For its Fall/Winter 2022 collection, originally unveiled in July, Kaptain Sunshine delves into truly opulent outerwear. You’ve got plush rocker coats, suede deck jackets, classic Prince of Wales check blazers and a wool/leather varsity jacket that epitomizes classic cool.

Some soft mid-layers, like knit cardigans and ribbed sweaters, reiterate easy comfort and flattering proportions.

Paired with Kojima’s signature militaria – quilted vests, retro training gear and baker’s pants – the whole look has a clean elegance, a sense of timelessness that draws inspiration from decades of clothing for men, including Japan’s inimitable Heavy Duty movement. Real clothes for real life.

It doesn’t hurt that Kaptain Sunshine is, frankly, fairly reasonably priced for a brand that develops a host of unique fabrics and manufactures virtually everything in its own country, although importing it into international retailers does come with a layer of charges that increase the cost a bit.

Still, with a host of stockists to choose from – including Cultizm, COVERCHORD and Namu Shop, to name a few – there’s no reason not to elevate your essentials with a bit of humble sophistication.
