“Kecil kecil cili padi”: the young Singaporean designs elegant clothes for people with a punch
I LOVE THAT SOME OF THE DRESSES I’VE SEEN IN YOUR INSTAGRAM FEED ARE ROOTED IN LOCAL TRADITIONS OR CULTURE. DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO REFLECT YOUR ROOTS IN YOUR WORK?
I think it’s important, but it’s not a priority. In fact, it all depends on the collection and the occasions. For example, for the Hari Raya collections, I will always favor modesty and draw inspiration from traditional clothing like baju kurung and kebaya in my construction. These are expressed in terms of manufacturing and modeling techniques.
WHAT IS LINAOTH’S DREAM?
The dream is for LINAOTH to be a luxury clothing brand for occasions. Under the same house brand, I am embarking on a semi-custom line where customers can order my designs for weddings, events and special occasions. I hope to launch it by February or March. There will also be Asian-influenced designs for RTW collections like Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, which I hope to launch in March. Finally, LINAOTH customization will remain an exclusive option where the possibilities are endless.
The ultimate dream is for the brand to break into the international market and sell in large multi-brand stores like Net-A-Porter. I think it’s going to be a long journey but I hope one day I’ll get there.
