Old Age Pensioners’ Organization Used Clothing and Garage Sale a Huge Success

The sale is a semi-annual fundraiser

The lower level of the Seniors’ Activity Center was bursting with bargains and happy customers at the semi-annual used clothing and garage sale hosted by the Organization of Old Age Retirees (OAPO) in Williams Lake on Friday and Saturday April 1 and 2.

With a bit of something for everyone, the OAPO event is popular in the community as a way to find affordable treasures but also to raise funds needed for the ongoing upkeep of the activity center for seniors, OAPO-supported scholarships and bursaries, as well as the Elves for Elders program which sees gift baskets given to lonely or needy seniors at Christmas.

OAPO President Tina Derksen said a team of volunteers had been sorting through donated items since early February to prepare for the sale. On the days of the event, 15 other volunteers were on hand each day to help.

Customer Leslie Sheppard said she buys all her jeans at the OAPO sale.

“I’m marking this date on my calendar,” Sheppard said, adding that she enjoys visiting everyone involved in the sale and appreciates what the event brings to the community.

“Recycling is the best part. When we recycle, we help the whole community.
