Prince Harry and Meghan Markle take a private jet from New York to Los Angeles
We have already explained why Prince Harry should choose to start flying commercially rather than continue to jet-set on private planes, but apparently it bears repeating. That’s because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left their New York getaway in a private plane, just hours after they appeared on stage at the Global Citizen Live event, which promoted, in part, the reduction of half US emissions by 2030. Ugh.
What also does not help the optics? The fact that Harry was called last month for taking private jets to and from a polo tournament, which isn’t a very good reason to excuse this behavior. Although it couldn’t be worse than when the couple attended the Google Climate Summit in 2019 and would have chosen to fly in private and stay in a gas guzzling yacht during your stay. TO. A. Climate. Mountain peak.
Look, the rich are going to get richer. And given the threats and scrutiny from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, you can kind of see why they want to make their whereabouts difficult to track, especially while traveling. They are also held to an extremely high standard, higher even than some of their other Royal Family counterparts – remember when Meghan was arrested by the tabloids for rocking her baby bump, just a few years after Kate Middleton was praised for doing the exact same thing?
But surely flying a private jet from New York to Southern California – only one flight which, according to Blue sky pattern, issued about 65 tons CO2 in the atmosphere – is not the only way to protect yourself. The fact that Harry and Meghan insist on flying in private feels worse because they want to be seen, above all, as advocates for change. Their purported reason for moving to the United States and stepping away from royal duties in the first place was to spend more time on the causes they care about – the Archewell website even has the slogan “Shared goal, global action”. And climate action is one of the topics they have raised again and again.
This is why when they call for global change and then refuse to reflect those same changes in their own lives – probably the easiest place for them to create the change, if you think about it! – it makes their message hollow and hypocritical. Like, you want us plebs to cut our emissions without applying it to yourselves? Due to Harry’s birth, they have one of the biggest platforms of all couples alive. It’s a huge responsibility, and it’s great that they want to use it to create a better world. But what good is calling for change when they undermine their message by their very actions?
So stop with the private jets, Harry and Meghan. It would be a lot cooler if you did.
