Springfield Schools PTA Holds Winter Clothing Drive | Community

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Springfield Schools PTA (SSPTA) is currently holding its first annual winter clothing drive. Donations of new or gently used snow pants and winter boots can be made February 7-11. These items will supplement the winter gear purchased by the SSPTA and will be distributed to staff at Elm Hill and Union Street Schools in Springfield. in their classrooms.

This year more than ever, supporting hard-working teachers and district staff is paramount. One of the issues teachers face in the classroom is students with missing or inadequate winter recreation clothing, which was brought to the attention of the SSPTA at their January meeting. Council members surveyed teachers in Elm Hill and Union Street and found a great need for extra snow pants, rain mitts, hats and boots, especially in the younger grades of Elm Hill. The SSPTA has since diverted funds to purchase more than two dozen pairs of waterproof mittens, twenty hats and several pairs of snow pants and winter boots for classroom use.

Because the SSPTA had not budgeted to meet such a need this year, it is asking the community to help fill the gaps with donations of gently used or new snow pants and winter boots. Snow pants should be sized between 5/6 and 16/18 and winter boots should be child size 11 to adult size 5. Items should be clean, free of rips, tears, odors strong and animal hair, and with functional zippers and buckles. Donation bins will be placed outside Elm and Union Street schools from Monday, February 7 through Friday, February 11, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ASTPS asks that you please place items in a bag before dropping them off. Surplus items will be donated in kind.

Additionally, monetary donations can be mailed to: Springfield Schools PTA, 43 Union Street, Springfield, VT 05156, with checks payable to Springfield Schools PTA.

With this need firmly in mind, the SSPTA plans to conduct an annual evaluation of teachers’ spare winter clothing so that they can replace or add items each winter as needed, ensuring that each student can stay safe and warm at school. This will be in addition to ongoing initiatives such as their signature Snack Tote program, which provides healthy snacks to school children in the district.

The Springfield Schools PTA holds virtual meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, and new members are always welcome. Updates can be found on Facebook at “Springfield Schools PTA”. For more information, please contact [email protected]
