When it comes to designer-musician collaborations, you can’t convince me that anything will surpass Stella McCartney x The Beatles. Never! The link would be big news any day, but tomorrow’s launch has a very special hook: the debut of the highly anticipated Peter Jackson. The Beatles: Come Back documentary, broadcast on Disney + on Thanksgiving Day.

Jackson’s three-part film chronicles the making of the band’s latest album, So be it, with extracts of more than 60 hours of unpublished sequences and unpublished recordings. Beyond the rare glimpses of the band at work – writing songs, rehearsing, doing silly things – and their latest live performance on the roof of Apple Corps (included in its full 40 minutes for the first time), To recover captures the late ’60s, the eventual end of The Beatles, and the start of all that followed for Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

For the occasion, Stella has developed a limited collection using a mix of iconic and less familiar Beatles imagery and graphics. “The film [captured] such a special and precious moment, it’s epic, ”Stella said on a call from Los Angeles, where she’s having a launch party tonight. “I wanted the collection to be a real moment too, and [highlight] the emotional family bond that I have. I think it goes beyond “normal” collaboration in this regard.

Stella drew elements and iconography from So be it and other albums, including graphics that have never been used in clothing before. A T-shirt and jacquard knit function The idiot, the trippy and unused landscape created for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Group; a regenerated bomber jacket (inspired by one of his father’s jackets) features large-scale Fab Four embroidery on the back; and several black-and-white knits merge the band’s classic logo with lesser-known alternative fonts. “These are collectibles,” she says. “It’s so important to create pieces that people will cherish and have an emotional connection with. This bomber jacket is a standout piece: anyone can wear it, you can share it with your friends and family, and you will always respect it.

Each piece is unisex and will be available exclusively in Stella McCartney stores and on Net-a-Porter from tomorrow, November 19; more importantly, they are all produced to the same exacting and sustainable standards as its main line. This is a change from what we generally think of as ‘group merch’, both in terms of quality and design. “A lot of people are just going to take an album and put it on a T-shirt, and it sells because of the band,” Stella says. “I will always push the concept further, because I have such a desire to deliver, not just for my father, but for Olivia and [Dhani] Harrison and Sean [Ono Lennon] and everyone in the Beatles family. There is daring in what we have created, and [a sense of] be really proud to love the Beatles and love music.

And because I had to ask: His favorite So be it song? “Come back”, no question. “’Get Back’ was a real collaboration, and in the documentary you see how they riff on it and make it a better song in the process. What it meant to go back to their roots, to their friendships, and to evolve, you experience that evolution in the movie.
