For Frances Lojkine, a new art museum in the center of Christchurch “looks like a lot of love”.

The $ 16 million Ravenscar House Museum, owned and operated by the Canterbury Museum, opens Monday on Rolleston Ave.

For the first time, it will present to the public a unique collection of art and furniture, owned by a family trust.

The museum was the vision of Christchurch couple Jim and Susan Wakefield, who wanted to use insurance proceeds from their earthquake-damaged home to build a modern museum for their collection of 110 designer paintings and furniture.

Susan Wakefield’s youngest daughter, Frances Lojkine, says the museum is a testament to her parents’ generosity.

Jim Wakefield passed away in November and Susan Wakefield is no longer involved in the management of the project due to health concerns, so the completion of the museum fell on their children.

Frances Lojkine is Susan Wakefield’s youngest daughter and used her art history degree to advise the museum’s new trust.

The museum is designed to recall the original Wakefield home, with a few paintings hanging in the same order and next to the same furniture as before.

The museum is filled with works of art by painters like Colin McCahon and Frances Hodgkins, as well as designer furniture.

For Lojkine, the museum evokes the old house and how his parents lived.

“When I stand in these rooms, I feel warm. It’s such a nice feeling to come home and feel like I’m in the old house.

“I come back here and I think it’s like being home again. And it’s just adorable. It’s touching, but in a charming way.

“The building seems like a lot of love to me.”

She said the museum was a testament to her parents’ generosity.

“It strikes me how incredibly generous it is.

“That they had the vision to bring this experience to the people of Christchurch is just a beautiful thing. It’s not about them, but about how it’s an amazing thing that they built that they wanted to share with people. “

The museum is filled with little echoes of her mother’s life. A red maple in the central courtyard was chosen because Lojkine gave his mother a maple tree for Christmas one year.

A metal desk in the museum entrance space is fashioned after a scratch made by a large planter on a stone patio when it was thrown in the Canterbury earthquakes in 2011.

And then there’s the art collection itself, which includes paintings by Colin McCahon, Frances Hodgkins, Gordon Walters, Ralph Hotere, Doris Lusk, CF Goldie, and Gottfried Lindauer.

The museum has a courtyard with a reflecting pool that illuminates the various rooms.

Lojkine said the collection reflects his mother’s personality.

“[The collection] seems very consistent to me.

“She was someone with this amazing brain for details and interested in so many different things and so knowledgeable about so many different things. You see it in the collection.

She showed her mother, who had a stroke five years ago, around the museum on Friday morning.

The museum library contains over 1,000 books as well as paintings by CF Goldie and Gottfried Lindauer.

“She said it was better than she had imagined and how happy she was to see it.

“She appreciated it and understood it and remembered all the jobs and the house.”

A collection of glass artwork by artist Wendy Fairclough feels iconic to the Lojkine Museum. A few pieces of glass were destroyed in the earthquakes, so Lojkine contacted the artist, who agreed to remake the pieces and redo the entire work.

“It tells the story of my connection to my mother, the connection to the original house, the effects of the earthquake and the building of the museum, really, all in one place.”

“It’s a beautiful piece. It is very serene.

The Ravenscar House Museum has an entrance fee of $ 25.
